New enterprise management capabilities including Platform API, enhanced governance, and advanced customization features
We are excited to announce a major update to our flagship enterprise offering, RapidAPI Enterprise Hub! This latest update includes a raft of enterprise management capabilities that enable organizations to integrate easily with their existing API environment, create enhanced governance and security policies, and customize and brand their white-labeled marketplaces to align with their business objectives.
As enterprises adopt modern API infrastructures spanning multiple teams, multiple clouds, and multiple API gateways, they need an open platform built for next-generation requirements. Key new features for our Hub include a new Platform API and Events API, role-based access control, API versioning, and out-of-the-box theming tools for customizing the Hub based on organizations’ brand identity. These features enable enterprises to integrate programmatically to any infrastructure including multi-cloud and multi-gateway environments, manage and govern across complex many-to-many API publishing models, and get to market faster with white-labeled marketplaces.
Enable Integration Across Any API Infrastructure with New Platform API and Events API
We have introduced several new features to accelerate creating integrations that build a more modern API infrastructure.
Platform API and Events API
The new events API and platform API enable you to streamline API infrastructure and processes by building and managing event-driven integrations with any system. By creating integration services that communicate to RapidAPI via the platform API and events API, as well as other third-party services via their admin APIs, the possibilities are endless. Whether you are integrating to multiple different API gateways, the CI/CD pipeline, custom monitoring and analytics dashboards, or other development tools, doing so with the platform API and events API enables you to do so programmatically.
Let’s take a deeper look at how the Events API and Platform API can work with your organizations’ integration services to connect across multiple API gateways.
- Step 1 – Your organization uses the RapidAPI Hub UI to configure connections with any API gateway. You are able to configure connections to multiple different API gateways.
- Step 2 – Your organization creates an integration service to sit between RapidAPI and the various API gateways.
- Step 3 – Your organization uses the RapidAPI Events API to inform the integration service of “events” that happen on the RapidAPI Platform. For example, a user action such as subscribing to an API on RapidAPI could be set up to trigger an “event.”
- Step 4 – Your organization uses the Platform API to pull data from RapidAPI to the integration service. For example, if a user updates the API definition on RapidAPI and an event is sent to notify the integration service, the integration service can then use the Platform API to read the latest API definition. After doing so, the integration service can use this information to update the API definition in the gateway you are integrating with, by making use of those systems’ admin APIs.
Enhance Governance with Role-Based Access Control and Management over API Usage
As our Hub has been adopted by leading enterprises across financial services, telecommunications, and more we have seen the need for enhanced governance capabilities. To meet this need, we are introducing several highly-requested features.
RBAC (role-based access control)
With role-based access control, enterprises can secure APIs and enforce access and usage policies by creating different roles for team members with varying permission levels.
The addition of API versioning increases efficiency for API providers and consumers to update APIs with improvements.
Ensure security by enabling OWASP authentication best practices such as activating two-factor authentication (2FA), hardened password requirements, and lockout after multiple incorrect login attempts
Enable organization administrators to easily review and approve or deny requests for API access, Hub access, and API publishing with approval workflows
Integrate to any 3rd party identity provider to support authentication with any identity layer including OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, and SAML
Automate configuration of user roles in Enterprise Hub based on the roles defined in any 3rd party identity provider.
Create Branded Marketplace Experiences with New Customization Features
Organizations can get to market faster with branded marketplaces thanks to new theming capabilities. You can watch a short overview of theming here.
Extend Enterprise Hub with new tabs and context-aware custom developed applications with the same look and feel as the native Hub environment. This enables enterprises to better highlight APIs and services in the Hub UI, all while providing a consistent user experience.
